Roundup post July 2010

What special or unusual event occurred?

This was the family vacation at the beach, which turned out to be lovely. We tried a new house, and it was wonderful. And although we were missing some members of the family, it nonetheless turned out to be marvelous.

Then I went on my first SALALM conference. It turned out quite well. It is not necessarily immediately important to my cataloguing work, but I do think it is important to be a part of the LA/IA network among libraries. Who knows when the connection will turn out to be important? And, ironically, I actually met some of my work colleagues at the conference for the first time.

And today, the last day of the month, I went on my first 10K race with my friend Rose. It went quite well, with a best personal time; and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Now to do even better next time!

What were my accomplishments this month?

10K of 1:32 : best personal time

What were my disappointments this month?

Well, I came back from vacation and within two days discovered that I had waited just a little too long to get my roof maintenance done — I had a roof leak. Fortunately it waited until I was home to happen; and it is not very severe, but still… Plus I’ve just discovered this week that the repair was not sufficient. (Good thing I haven’t paid the bill yet.)

I also just was told this past week about some bad family news. Suffice it to say that I am in prayer about a much-loved member of my family.

What crafts did I work on?

Worked on and finished bamboo socks

Worked on cotton socks

Worked on Citron shawl, especially at conference.

Started new pair of socks (#7 pair for the year, right on time), but forgot to start them with extra stitches for space. Will have to start them over.

Worked on denim quilt at work a little

Didn’t really have time to work on much of anything else.

What books/music/shows did I enjoy this month?

The family went to Toy Story 3 during the beach week. I’ve been told that many got very teary-eyed and sentimental about that movie. Me, yes there were some sentimental moments, but the only tears I cried were tears of laughter. It was hilarious, and really good. They did an excellent job with that film, indeed with that series of films.

What fun things did I do with my family and/or friends?

Beach; movie; 10K; conference (kinda)

What gifts did I give and/or receive?

The family shared the gift of presence.

What special or unusual purchases did I make?

Airplane tickets turned out to be a last-minute purchase for traveling to the conference. My ride fell through due to a family emergency, but hopefully the money will happen, as promised.

The roof repair was also a bit of a surprise.

What illnesses or health concerns did I have?

Allergy testing happened, and the week wasn’t bad. I did have an allergy attack this month, but it happened after I was back on antihistamines. Interesting and maddening. I’m still not completely back to normal yet.

Apparently I need to add in molds to the allergy shots. Hopefully I will be able to see a difference eventually so that I won’t have to be on the medicine All The Time.

Anything else noteworthy to include?

Definitely decided on keeping the Droid, but not so happy with the fact that the companionlink software just doesn’t do the job. I’m going to try the wireless option and live without a separate tasks option, I think. Maybe. I haven’t quite decided on that, but I do like the Droid itself.

I envy you both the family vacation and the creative endeavors. Bummer about the roof and especially about the roof repair. We’ve had roof issues too, so in know how frustrating this can be. Even more frustrating these days, is finding someone to do quality work on a big house project like that.
